Kubica quickest in practice 1 - Hungary

A late run on super-soft tyres allowed Robert Kubica and BMW-Sauber to set the pace in the opening free practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix

On the first anniversary of his debut as a Formula One racing driver, Kubica set a 1:22.390 lap in the final minutes to knock Ferrari's Felipe Massa off the top spot by 0.129 seconds.

The McLarens dominated much of the session, but ended up fourth and fifth behind Kimi Raikkonen.

Unsurprisingly given the Hungaroring's low grip reputation, the first 45 minutes of the session saw little action.

Lewis Hamilton was the first of the main contenders to attempt a flying lap, and duly went quickest for ten minutes before being beaten by teammate Fernando Alonso.

They swapped places twice more before Massa came to the fore with 11 minutes remaining, but his tenure on top was brief, as Kubica then emerged on the softer Bridgestones.

Massa retained second despite ending his session stopped in the pitlane exit after encountering a mechanical problem as he set out for a final run.

His teammate Raikkonen moved up to third with his final lap, with the McLarens completing the top five.

Nick Heidfeld could not match Kubica's pace and took sixth, while Nico Rosberg briefly infiltrated the top four towards the end of the session before being edged down to seventh.

The Hondas and Ralf Schumacher filled the final top ten positions, with both the German and Rubens Barrichello spinning at Turn 1 without significant delay.

Other drivers in trouble included Mark Webber and Vitantonio Liuzzi, who both stopped on track.

Liuzzi ended up slower than new teammate Sebastian Vettel, who took 16th on his first appearance for Toro Rosso. His fellow returnee Sakon Yamamoto was slowest of all.
