Loeb wary of taking too many risks
Sebastien Loeb has said that he cannot afford to make any mistakes in the second half of the season if he is to catch Marcus Gronholm in the WRC standings
The Frenchman is nine points behind the Ford driver with eight rounds remaining, and he has admitted that he will only take risks if he feels he has the pace to win.
"It's quite simple really, I will do what I can to win," said Loeb. "But I can't afford to risk throwing it all away either because that would simply make matters worse.
"I will push to begin with and see where we stand. We will need to hit the ground running and find our marks early."
The season gets back underway in Finland next week after a two-month gap between events, where Gronholm usually stars on home soil.
"I will start the rally with the intention of winning," Loeb added. "If that means taking big risks, I will ease off. I have nine points to make up and I can't afford to make any more mistakes."
Citroen team boss Guy Frequelin added that Loeb could not afford to make the championship situation far worse by trying to match Gronholm if the Finn had a clear advantage in Finland.
"Sebastien is fully aware of the situation and will be out to win, but he also knows that complicating an already difficult picture wouldn't be a smart idea," he said.
