Spyker set to discuss future with Albers

Spyker bosses plan to sit down with Christijan Albers before Formula One's summer break in August to discuss his future, amid mounting pressure on the Dutchman to up his game

Albers, who has been outperformed by teammate Adrian Sutil this year, has faced fresh criticism for leaving the pits early at Magny-Cours last weekend and driving off with the refuelling hose still attached to his car.

Spyker director Michiel Mol has admitted that Albers is facing difficult circumstances, and has suggested that the Dutchman may not benefit from staying at their team next year.

"We don't have to beat around the bush," said Mol in an interview with Spyker's Formula One magazine. "Adrian was usually faster than Christijan this year. Chris is struggling with the tuning. When he finds a good set-up, he immediately goes fast, that's true.

"Christijan has an aggressive driving style, and that doesn't work as well with the current Bridgestone tyres. The new tyres, which are a lot slower than the race rubber from last year, are not suited to rough treatment.

"(The) fact is, it's pretty remarkable that a rookie is often faster. Chris finds this a difficult situation. That much is clear. It is a little like the situation at McLaren, where [Lewis] Hamilton is always faster than [Fernando] Alonso."

Speaking about the future of both his drivers, Mol made it clear the team were interested in keeping Sutil on. But he drew short of promising anything for Albers.

"Various teams have shown an interest in Adrian. I hope we can keep him. And Chris? After a race or two or three, we will sit down at the table with him. He wants to reach the top, but we won't get there by 2008. He is ready for teams like Williams or Toyota, but is that going to happen?"

Mol has also said that he is still interested in giving Jos Verstappen a run-out in their car during Friday practice for the Belgian Grand Prix, although plans to test him at Spa this month are now unlikely to go ahead.

"I don't know if we will make the test week at Spa in July, but it is still a good idea," said Mol. "Jos in a Formula One car one last time, and a Spyker to boot.

"(But) no, Jos is not a candidate for a Formula One race seat. I think we won't be seeing him in action as a race driver any more. He is really busy with other things at the moment, like his young son Max."
