Elias could be sidelined for three months
Toni Elias is likely to be out of action for three months after breaking his left leg in a crash during the opening practice session for the Dutch Grand Prix
The Spaniard has undergone surgery in Assen hospital because flying him home to Barcelona would have increased the risk of a blood clot.
The Gresini Honda rider fell when he lost control of the front end through a fast left hander approaching the end of the lap.
Elias slid over the asphalt and was briefly caught underneath the bike, before being thrown into a series of rolls and tumbles when he hit the gravel trap.
His ankle twisted and the major tendons around his knee were pulled, forcing his femur to eventually break into a combination of a shape resembling a triangle.
However, the circuit doctors have said that a broken femur is regarded as a less serious injury than tendon damage or a broken knee.
They believe Elias will be sidelined for three months, but have suggested it would take until the autumn for someone not as fit to recover from the same injury.
