H21: Audi in front as rain closes in
Audi are just three hours away from a second consecutive Le Mans victory with their diesel-powered R10, but all teams are now wondering about the weather at the French circuit
Several teams had predicted that rain would hit the race around midday local time, but as the 21st hour came to a close the track was still dry. The temperature has dropped though, and the early morning sunshine has been replaced by an overcast sky.
Frank Biela is currently holding on to a comfortable five lap lead for the No. 1 Audi, and despite his advantage the German is still the fastest man on the track.
The Peugeot 908s are still occupying the remaining places on the podium, while Pescarolo have lost more ground to the diesel cars after they suffered problems with front bodywork rubbing on a tyre.
Rollcentre Racing have taken their time in recent pit stops to ensure that their Pescarolo is fit to get to the finish, and the British team remains in a comfortable fifth place.
The No. 31 Binnie Motorsports Lola is leading LMP2 by 22 laps, and the Zytek of Adrian Fernandez is the only other car in that class still running.
Darren Turner is leading the GT1 class by a lap from the Corvette of Johnny O'Connell, but the Prodrive Aston Martin team will not be relaxing, as they have suffered dramas in the closing hours for the past two years at Le Mans.
Problems have already struck the No. 007 car, which has made several visits to the pits for repairs since Tomas Enge spun the car in the previous hour.
The Imsa Performance Porsche still holds the GT2 lead, and Richard Lietz is currently running 17th overall.
