Heidfeld hopes for F1 seat in 2000

McLaren test driver Nick Heidfeld has expressed his desire to get into Formula One next season

He told AUTOSPORT Online that he did hope to enter Formula One in 2000, although he insisted that he had not been approached by anyone.

'I haven't spoken with Ron [Dennis] or Norbert Haug [head of Mercedes Motorsport],' he said.

However, he confirmed that he would accept a drive at the Woking-based team if it was offered to him.

Heidfeld thrilled spectators at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday when he drove last year's championship winning McLaren MP4-13 up the famous hill.

The Formula 3000 driver, who is strongly tipped to fill a seat at the McLaren team next season, drew large applause for his performance.

Returning down the hill, Heidfeld slowed and wheel spun the McLaren, giving crowds a better glimpse of the car - which had flown past earlier on.

Current McLaren driver David Coulthard was also present at the event on Saturday, driving an older Mercedes W154.

However, according to insiders at the event, he was less than happy to be appearing alongside Heidfeld.

Yesterday, the German set the fastest time up the hill, completing the course in 47.5 seconds.
