Massa: McLaren were unbeatable

Felipe Massa believes rivals McLaren were in a class of their own at the Monaco Grand Prix, after admitting there was nothing he could have done to beat his rivals

The Ferrari driver finished almost 70 seconds behind race winner Fernando Alonso, and never looked like having the pace needed to fight with the McLarens.

"Definitely McLaren today showed incredible pace," said Massa. "I think even if I pushed like 150 percent on the limit, we (the result) would stay the same in the end.

"There was nothing I could do about them, unless there was a mistake or maybe a retirement.

"We scored as many points as possible, and now the gap (in the title chase) is a bit bigger, but five points is nothing in the championship.

"We will work hard for the next race. It was impossible to catch them here, but we will try and be ahead of them in the next race."

Massa believes that the gap between himself and the McLarens ahead of him was not truly representative of his speed because of the amount of time he lost behind backmarkers.

"In the beginning, Lewis was not very quick - I think he was also heavier - and I was just following him. Fernando was much quicker than us. That was really the key of the race for Fernando, because he managed to create a gap which was a little bit easier to keep after the pitstop.

"For me, I just kept running the first 15 laps behind Lewis without any problem, and then I just went into traffic so it was very difficult for me. I stayed a lot behind (Jarno) Trulli, a lot behind Davidson, and I think Davidson was even penalised for that. I mean, he was maybe 10 laps in front of me.

"So that really destroyed my race against them, because they were just pulling away and I was behind traffic.

"But anyway, in the end the result is quite good for me, so we'll keep fighting."
