Maiden point 'a victory' for Super Aguri

Super Aguri managing director Daniel Audetto has said that his team felt like they had won the Spanish Grand Prix when they scored their first world championship point on Sunday

Takuma Sato took the team's first top eight finish at the Circuit de Catalunya, after holding off Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella in the closing stages of the race.

The point he scored could prove crucial in the fight for constructors' championship positions later this season.

But Audetto has revealed to autosport.com that that the result meant much more than that to the team at the chequered flag.

"You know, we are professionals," said Audetto about the emotions the teams were feeling in the closing stages of the race. So until the last lap you have to stay focused and concentrate.

"And then the explosion from the team was like how a victory must feel for Ferrari."

The surprise point for Super Aguri, in only their 21st F1 race, has exceeded the team's predictions for the start of the campaign. Audetto has made it clear, however, that they are not going to relax and feel they have achieved their targets this year now.

"No. We always want to improve, but you have to understand that as a small team with a small budget we don't have the pace of development like other teams," he said.

"So we try to compensate with our creativity and the speed to transform the ideas without too much bureaucracy. We are only focused on one thing - performance, performance, performance.

"For Aguri Suzuki and I, when we started this adventure, it was really a big challenge and very few people believed we could make it successful.

"Even at the start of the season last year it was already a big success. To then be 10th in Brazil with the seventh quickest time was also a big success with an old car.

"And now we show the world that it was not just by luck that we did a good race in Brazil. It was really a good job."
