Peugeot 908 wins on debut at Monza
Marc Gene and Nicolas Minassian took victory for Peugeot in the first race for the diesel-powered 908 at Monza on Sunday
The pair won by more than a lap ahead of reigning Le Mans Series champions Emmanuel Collard and Jean-Christophe Boullion in the new Pescarolo, while Stephane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy were third in the second Peugeot.
The 908s were the class of the field in the early stages of the race as they ran first and second, but Sarrazin and Lamy lost valuable time due to problems with one of the doors on the closed-top LMP1 machine in the first half of the race.
The problems started when Sarrazin took over the car from Lamy, and he was forced to return to the pits as one of the doors opened on track.
The car was affected by more problems after that, as Sarrazin was forced come in again when the door came ajar shortly after the initial problem.
Sarrazin and Lamy then showed the potential of the new car as they charged back up the leaderboard, and their best lap was more than two seconds faster than the best Pescarolo effort.
The Horag Racing Lola took LMP2 honours ahead of reigning class champions RML, who led the race in the early stages.
GT1 honours went to the Luc Alphand Aventures Corvette C6.R which finished in ninth place overall, while the GPC Sport team led a Ferrari 1-2-3 in GT2.
