Button backs Honda's green campaign

Jenson Button is hoping Honda's new green campaign will help raise awareness of global environmental issues among Formula One fans

The Japanese squad unveiled on Monday their radical new livery and a new scheme to raise awareness of the environmental issues. The car features an image of the earth instead of of sponsor logos.

Button is hoping Honda's new plan will make F1 fans think of the environmental problems the world faces.

"The people who work in F1 and the F1 viewers are probably the most difficult people to turn around into making a difference, so this campaign is important," Button told Sky News.

Button added: "It looks very different - no sponsors on the car. The idea is to raise awareness of global issues that we have and hopefully it's going to make a difference.

"At the moment, F1 is carbon neutral, but that's not where we want to be - it should be carbon positive. But maybe in the future it will get there."

Despite the fact that their new livery carries no advertising decals, Button said the team have actually increased the number of sponsors.

"Actually we have an extra 11 sponsors this year compared to last year, and that's because they want to get involved in this idea and raise awareness," he added.
