Paffett could race year-old car

Gary Paffett is set to make his return to the DTM in a year-old Mercedes, this week's Autosport magazine reveals

Mercedes-Benz motorsport chief Norbert Haug is unwilling to make any changes to the current HWA squad, which is made up of Bernd Schneider, Bruno Spengler, Mika Hakkinen, and Jamie Green.

"We learned in December that Gary was interested in coming back to the DTM," said Haug. "We had no reason to change any of our drivers and I would expect no surprises in the four HWA cars."

Paffett is expected to drive a 2006-spec car prepared by Persson Motorsport, as Haug believes it would be unfair to demote the drivers who raced last year.

Paffett said: "Obviously it's not the perfect situation but I am considering it. It's all about me getting back into racing this year."

Haug believes that Paffett has the talent to be competitive even in older machinery, and he expects the 2005 champion to be able to contend for victories.

"If you are a real superstar, you can win in a year-old car," said Haug. "Gary is a real star and he can do a good job."
