Hylton enters Daytona aged 72
James Hylton is aiming to become the oldest driver to start a Nextel Cup race when he attempts to qualify for the Daytona 500
The former race winner, 72, last started a Cup race in 1993, but he had a brief outing in the Busch Series at Milwaukee last year where he retired after four laps with brake problems.
Hylton has acquired a car and engine package from Richard Childress Racing, and he believes he has a genuine chance of running competitively.
"I have never been able to come to Daytona with a well-financed operation and a first-rate car," he said.
"At my age, the odds against me are astronomical but it's a challenge and I love a good challenge."
Hylton has raced at Daytona 36 times, including 15 starts in the 500. His best career finish in the race came in 1967, when he finished third in a 1965 Dodge.
"I have always wanted to race the 500 and not be limited by budget constraints and even though it has taken over 40 years, I am finally at that position," he said.
Hylton intends to enter the car in 19 Nextel Cup races during 2007, with Damon Lusk taking over the driving duties after the season-opener.
