New Zealand win chaotic feature race

Jonny Reid survived a chaotic weather-affected feature race at Sentul to complete a double for New Zealand

The sprint race winner had a comfortable lead in the closing stages, but had his advantage negated by a safety car period after Robbie Kerr spun out of fourth place.

The start of the race had been delayed due to a heavy rainstorm, and eventually the track dried out, forcing the majority of teams to make a second stop for slick tyres.

Hulkenberg had dominated the early stages in the worst of the conditions, as he repeated his wet-weather dominance from the last round in Malaysia.

However, after the first pit stops Reid was the faster of the two, and he caught and passed Hulkenberg with relative ease.

"We made some changes in the pits and it improved the car," said Reid. "I knew Nico would have to take the points, whereas needed to make them up in the championship.

The German driver seemed out of contention when he had a slow second stop for slick tyres, but he was handed a chance at the end with a three lap dash to the finish after the safety car came out.

Germany now leads the standings from Team Great Britain by 12 points, while New Zealand are up to fifth thanks to their double victory.

Nicolas Lapierre used good strategy to take third place despite not having the ultimate pace, while Enrico Toccacelo put in a late race charge to take fourth place.

The Netherlands made up ground in the middle of the race by being the first team to switch to slick tyres, and as Jeroen Bleekemolen's pace improved the rest of the field followed.

Alex Yoong was unable to capitalise on some good pace early in the race and finished eighth, ahead of Salvador Duran.

The Mexican driver started on the front row, but had several offs which dropped him down the order.

Switzerland took ninth place after a disappointing weekend for Neel Jani, while Phil Giebler spun while trying to catch the safety car near the end, and dropped from fourth to tenth for Team USA.
