Carlin confirm Vettel for 2007
The BMW Sauber F1 team confirmed today that Sebastian Vettel will race for Carlin Motorsport in World Series by Renault next year
The 19-year-old had hinted that the drive was one of his options for next year, as it allowed him to continue his testing duties with BMW.
"To be confirmed as test and reserve driver for BMW meant a big step for me, but at the same time I am glad I can go racing," said Vettel.
Earlier this year, Vettel competed in a handful of World Series by Renault events, and he took two wins at Misano for Carlin.
Last weekend at Macau the German raced for Carlin's Formula Three team rather than ASM, the team he had been with all season in the F3 Euro Series.
"I can continue to learn with the Carlin team, which I already know," he added.
Vettel had said at the weekend that a World Series drive was more likely than GP2, because it would not interfere with his BMW role.
He added: "If there are any clashes in dates, Formula One has priority, that much is clear."
Team boss Trevor Carlin said: "I'm delighted to be able to confirm that Sebastian will be driving for our World Series team in 2007. Sebastian drove for us at the Misano round of the World Series championship this year and his performance was flawless.
"He has demonstrated both in the F3 Euroseries and in his time testing in F1, that he has the talent and determination to succeed. Together with Red Bull and BMW, I'm sure we can help to develop Sebastian as a driver and challenge for the championship next season."
