Kenseth wants to up his game

Current championship leader Matt Kenseth believes he needs to perform at a higher level if he wants to win the Nextel Cup this year.

The 2003 champion moved to the top of the standings after Martinsville this weekend, but in the closest Chase for the Championship so far, any driver in the top 10 could still win the title with just four rounds remaining.

"We are leading the championship and that's better than the alternative," he said. "but it's still wide open."

Just 171 points cover all 10 drivers in the points, and previous championship leader Jeff Burton slipped to fifth with an engine failure last weekend.

Kenseth knows that a bad day for him this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway would have similar effects to his championship charge as the majority of the contenders are remaining consistent.

"We have to start running better, or we'll let it slip away," said Kenseth. "We've struggled at the last two mile and a half tracks, and we'll need to turn that around if we're going to get the job done."
