Wirth to make debut with Coyne

Andreas Wirth will make his debut in the Champ Car World Series with Dale Coyne Racing at Surfers Paradise next weekend

The German finished third in this year's Champ Car Atlantic series, where he took two victories and led the standings early in the season.

In previous years the Atlantic champion has often made his way on to the grid at the end of the Champ Car season, but Wirth didn't expect he would get an opportunity this year.

"I still can't believe it, this doesn't seem real," he said. "I thought my chance to run in Champ Car this year was over when I was no longer in contention for the Atlantic title.

"I'm getting to live the dream that I thought I'd lost, it's not possible to express how grateful I am to Dale Coyne Racing - this is huge for me."

Wirth drove for Forsythe Racing in the Atlantic series this year, and has already tested one of their Champ Cars.

Forsythe's VP of Operations, Neil Mickelwright, said: "Andreas is a real racer, and a determined hard working young man. Having seen him handle a Champ Car on a test day I'm confident he will do a fine job."

Wirth added: "People tend to underestimate Dale Coyne's team but these guys are always giving young guys like me a chance.

"It's really cool to run my first race with the same team that gave Paul Tracy his first shot as a rookie, and with any luck I'll be a success too."

Wirth will be the fourth driver to race the no.19 car for Coyne, following on from Cristiano da Matta, Mario Dominguez and Juan Caceres.
