Stewart backs Hill retirement

Damon Hill should quit Grand Prix racing, according to Jackie Stewart

The three-times world champion who retired in 1973 believes the time has come for Hill to bow out of the sport.

'I think it is time for Damon to retire,' he said.

'He is 38 years old, and obviously getting more aggravation out it [Formula One] than satisfaction.

'He has to start thinking about the next phase in his life. He is going to live to at least three score and ten [70 years].

'I was lucky, I retired at 34 and built up a whole new life for myself. I got just as much fulfilment out of that as I did out of racing. I hope Damon enjoys that same privilege.'

Hill's on-off retirement plans clouded the last race in France and are now threatening to overshadow the British Grand Prix.

'All sportsmen have to retire at some time or another - the question is when you do it and how comfortable you are that you are going to stay retired,' added Stewart.

'That is the big issue and you have to be sure. If Damon is unsure then he is quite right to stay until his mind is made up and he can announce it.'
