Tracy fastest in first session

Paul Tracy was quickest in the opening practice session for the Denver round of the Champ Car World Series, despite having to sit out eight minutes of the session as a penalty for causing a red flag

The Canadian tapped Nicky Pastorelli into a spin, with the stranded Rocketsports car prompting a stoppage. Both had to take Champ Car's standard eight minute penalty as a consequence.

But Tracy rebounded to beat championship leader Sebastien Bourdais to the fastest time of the session.

AJ Allmendinger was third quickest in the second Forsythe car, despite brushing the wall and then spinning and stalling late on.

Bruno Junqueira's troubled season continued as a turbo problem forced him to switch to his spare car. He ended up seventh.

The usual frontrunners shied away from the extremely dusty track at first, allowing rookies like Will Power and Katherine Legge to dominate the early running.

Legge later became the second person to cause a red flag, spinning and stalling at Turn 4.
