Villeneuve rules out returning to GPDA

Canadian Jacques Villeneuve has ruled out returning to the Grand Prix Drivers' Association unless the body undergoes some serious changes

Villeneuve, who decided to leave the GPDA following the incident with Michael Schumacher in qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, had been urged to return to the drivers' body in order play a part in a renewed effort to make Schumacher accountable for the incident.

Williams third driver and GPDA member Alex Wurz said in Canada last week that Villeneuve should come back into the GPDA so that important changes could be made.

"The point is that, as in any election, you cannot object to the outcome if you don't take part in the voting. In our case, you cannot make the important changes we need to make if you aren't an active GPDA member," said Wurz.

Villeneuve, however, said on Thursday that things needed to change in order for him to return.

"I would not join the GPDA until something changed in the first place. It is that simple. Which is a shame that it has come to that," said Villeneuve ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

"You don't leave something and then go back and then leave again. There was a reason for leaving, I just didn't feel comfortable being part of the group, so until it changes I am still not comfortable being part of the group.

"I don't want to start political battles and games and if that is what is required to have the changes then I am not interested."

When asked what needed changing, Villeneuve replied: "I don't want to get into it."

The BMW driver had been very critical of Schumacher, a GPDA director, following the Monaco incident.

"Personally, I am not happy that someone can run the GPDA and act like that," he said earlier this month.
