Kubica quickest in practice 1 - Canada
Robert Kubica continued his impressive Friday pace in 2006 as he topped the opening free practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix
The 21-year-old pole lapped the Montreal circuit in 1:16.390, in his BMW Sauber, beating Honda's British test driver Anthony Davidson by just under two seconds.
Williams tester Alex Wurz was third while seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher began his quest for an eighth Montreal win with fourth, and best of the race drivers, in his Ferrari.
Behind him, the Honda pair of Rubens Barrichello and Briton Jenson Button came in fifth and sixth of the 17 drivers who set a laptime.
As usual, world champion Fernando Alonso failed to set a laptime, and neither did his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella, with both Renault drivers joining 10 others in failing to complete a full lap.
The slippery track surface at the start of the session caught out Takuma Sato, who spun his Super Aguri exiting turn one, but continued without damage.
That was shortly after Midland test driver Giorgio Mondini ground to a halt on the outside of the track exiting turn two following a technical failure.
The team's race driver Christijan Albers has his own drama as he left his braking too late at turn three with ten minutes of the session remaining - skating off the track, at turn three, but reversing back onto the circuit.
Both Japanese Sakon Yamamoto, and Austrian Alex Wurz, the test drivers for Super Aguri and Williams, straight-lined the final chicane, choosing to give the famous wall of champions on the outside of the corner a wide berth.
But Midland's Tiago Monteiro was less lucky and robbed his mechanics of their lunch break by smashing into the Wall of Champions right at the end of the session and ripping off the right hand side of his car. Pos Driver Team Time Laps
