Capello: R10 best car I ever drove

Long time Audi driver Rinaldo Capello believes that the diesel-powered R10 TDI is the best machine he has ever driven at Le Mans despite the No. 7 car's catalogue of problems that has ruled it out of any realistic chance of victory

The Italian, renowned as one of the fastest sportscar drivers over a single lap, has won Le Mans in both Audi's R8 and Bentley's EXP Speed 8, but reckons the diesel racer is better than both.

"Unfortunately we have had many problems in this race, but I have to say that for me the R10 TDI is the best racing car I have ever driven," he told autosport.com.

"It really is a joy to drive this car at Le Mans. Even in the last two stints like this I have tried really hard to push after the safety car and I did one stint that was always in the 3:33, 3:34.

"The car is very, very fast and it gives to the driver a very good feeling, especially in the high-speed corners.

"I have driven the Audi R8 and the Bentley, and the first race I did was 1998 with the McLaren F1, but I would say that in my experience the R10 TDI is the best car I have ever driven at Le Mans."

Dindo was speaking as the No. 7 car he shares with record winner Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish made the latest in a long line of lengthy pitstops to change the floor of the car in an effort to cure a vibration.

The No. 8 car continues to lead the race, 13 laps ahead of Capello's squad, and the Italian reckons that his crew could have been up there fighting for the win without the list of problems that include fuel injection and a broken floor.

"I think they ran without problems since the beginning of the race and actually you have to say that our car has had so many problems that we are unable to attack it," he admitted.

"We knew already before the race that it would be a hard challenge, because we did a lot of tests before the race with diesel. Unfortunately all day the problems happened on our car and it cost us 12 laps and that is a little bit too much."
