Wilson warms up in style

RuSPORT's Justin Wilson bounced back from a slightly disappointing qualifying session to top the warm-up times for tomorrow's Grand Prix of Portland

The race warm-up was held this evening due to a new noise-limit regulation for Sunday mornings. But as Newman/Haas Racing Sebastien Bourdais mentioned, aside from it being extra hard work for the mechanics to make the change from qualifying set-up to race set-up in just two hours between qualifying and warm-up, in fact the change in timing has worked in their favour.

Most believe the Portland track conditions in warm-up will be far more representative of the track conditions in the race tomorrow.

However, the track was so crowded in the 30-minute session - frequently with 16 of the 18 cars on track simultaneously - that the relevance of lap times is open to question, especially given that no team know how much fuel another team are running.

For the record, Bourdais was about a tenth of a second shy of Wilson's time, while Oriol Servia of PKV Racing bounced back from his two shunts this weekend to set third fastest time on the fourth of his 21 laps.

Wilson's teammate Cristiano da Matta was fourth, just ahead of pole-sitter Bruno Junqueira, while Dan Clarke continued his impressive form here to go seventh fastest, just behind Forsythe Championship Racing's AJ Allmendinger.

Paul Tracy had a spin and was only ninth fastest.
