Q & A with Jenson Button

Q. What happened to the car?

JB: We don't know. The race while it lasted was good fun, I loved it. I had an oil leak and that is as much as I know.

Q. Did you get any warnings?

JB: Not sure it was the engine. It was an oil fire, I had it as soon as I lifted off, I saw it in the rear view mirror and it put oil on the rear tyres and it spun me around. But the engine was still running when I turned it off.

Q. This weekend was a bit of disaster for you. How frustrating is that?

JB: It is frustrating. Very frustrating. It has been a tough weekend and it is a pity it was this circuit and my home Grand Prix. Yesterday was tough and disappointing and today was looking good. I was enjoying the race and having a lot of fun coming through the field but I was out after 10 laps - the race is a lot longer than that.

We don't know where we would have ended up but it was a positive race disappointingly. But we can take away the positives - the car was working well in the race and the fans were amazing. Walking back to the pits was quite emotional.

Q. Was it a better performance today than yesterday?

JB: It was a much more positive day even though we didn't finish. Much more positive day and I think it was good for the fans to see some overtaking now, it was a pretty exciting race in the first few laps, I have had massive support this weekend. When I was walking back in hearing the crowd screaming and them waving the flags it was an amazing feeling, they have been very supportive and we have to say a big thanks for that.

Q. Did it lift you after everything that happened this weekend?

JB: Well, the race did itself, the eight laps I was in the race and walking back in definitely. I threw my gloves into the crowd and they offered me a bottle of champagne, which was nice. I am not a big fan of champagne but I said thanks.

Q. Was this one of the worst weekends of your F1 career?

JB: No. I am with a team that I believe in, and I am at the top of my game so definitely not. It was a tough weekend but definitely not one of the worst weekends of my career.

Q. How do you go about lifting yourself from here?

JB: If we were slow it would be a massive issue but we are not that slow we have just been so unlucky when things have gone wrong. This is the third failure that has taken us out of the race. I am not saying it is the engine, I don't know what it is yet. When we get to Canada we have got to be positive and we have got to sit down when we come back from here and discuss where we go from here. We are not as quick as the three top teams and we can beat BMW.

I don't know what Rubens' issues were in the race but I think we are quick enough to beat BMW and Canada is a very different circuit, a very different aero level and our car was worked well on that level in the past. We have a few little improvements but nothing that will move us forward to Ferrari or Renault now.

Q. This was Honda's first point-less race of the season. On the surface it appears Honda are on a decline at the moment, but you would probably say otherwise?

JB: No, I wouldn't say otherwise. We are not as strong as we were at the start off the season and a lot of that is because the top teams have developed and we haven't. There are many areas that we need to improve in, we know that, the full size wind tunnel is going to help us a lot, and that is a big difference. Throughout the season little bits and little bits make a big difference and we haven't had that with our wind tunnel.

We would have to test the parts after we had tested them in the wind tunnel to see if it was working, before we put in on the car for the race. A lot of teams put the car in the wind tunnel and stick it straight on the car in the race so they are non-stop. That is what we have lacked. That is not the only problem because we have other areas we need to work on, but we know what they are and we will get better.
