Hakkinen wants Schumacher explanation
Former world champion Mika Hakkinen believes Michael Schumacher should give a public explanation of the Monaco incident to clear his name
The Finn, however, says he is not giving his take on the incident until he hears the German's version of the events from the Ferrari driver himself.
"There is no explanation," Hakkinen told reporters at Silverstone about the Monaco incident.
"I think this is a sport that is, I think motor racing and a lot of sports in the world provide an example for the young sportsmen and sportswomen to play a fair game, be good at athletics and we are the idols - we are the example for them.
"To show that we can win fair, we want to fight fair, and that is why we can get our goal and our success. I think it is important that Michael explains to the public what happened, so the table is clean."
Hakkinen, a former rival of Schumacher before retiring from Formula One at the end of 2002, gave the German the benefit of the doubt until he hears an explanation from the Ferrari driver himself
"Obviously I haven't spoken to Michael and I have not asked him what happened," he added.
"Was it a technical problem? Was it a driver mistake? I don't know. I haven't spoken to him and of course I saw it on television what happened and I could put my own judgement on it but that is like talking behind his back.
"So I would like to hear from himself what went wrong."
