Webber: Silverstone run-off is marginal

Mark Webber has backed Juan Pablo Montoya's call for changes to the run-off areas at some of Silverstone's fastest sections

The increased corner speeds this year have made Silverstone more challenging than ever, with Copse now potentially flat-out.

Speaking at a promotional event for Williams sponsor Philips, Webber agreed with Montoya's suggestion that the run-off at Copse was now inadequate given the latest cars' performance.

"We're quicker at Copse and Becketts than we've ever gone through there," Webber told autosport.com.

"With the naked eye you can see that the cars are definitely not any slower, but for us we're feeling a lot because we're going through there faster than we ever have.

"With the run-off area at Copse, you need everything to be bolted on the car because if you have any failures through there it's not going to be nice.

"If everything's going well, it's still fine, and for driver error the run off should be okay, but for mechanical failures, it's quite quick."

Like Montoya, Webber does not want to see the circuit itself changed.

"We all like a challenge," he said. "I don't like to have too much comfort actually. It's good to have a buzz, but we've got to be careful it doesn't go too far."

Webber added that the increased corner speeds could limit the amount of overtaking seen at Silverstone.

"With the speeds so quick through the corners,it's going to be hard for us to stay close," he said. "But we'll see. Silverstone's had some good races in the last couple of years.

"The tyre war there is a bit more spread out. When you have the tyres a bit further apart there tends to be more racing."
