BAR deal exclusive

BAR's engine deal with Honda is exclusive despite rumours that Jordan would

be supplied with an engine 'on an equal specification basis.'
A BAR spokeswoman said that the deal was exclusive to the team and would
involve an all new engine.

Jordan, who currently run customer Mugen-Honda units, announced a two year
extension to their deal saying it would be supplied with Honda developed
engines through Mugen on an equal specification basis.

The team refused to make any comment on the exact specification of the
engine it would run next year but when Honda was asked if the deal was
unique to BAR, a spokeswoman told AUTOSPORT Online, 'Basically, yes.

'There is nothing to suggest that the engine will be offered to other teams.
Honda will supply engines directly to BAR and they will also technically
support Jordan.'

However, when asked about the comparative specifications of the Mugen
customer and Honda works engines there was no comment other than 'both
engines will be competitive.'

In 1987 Honda supplied both Williams and Lotus with equal specification
engines.

Both teams had works deals with the only stipulation being that Lotus
fielded a Japanese driver.
