Wurz stays on top in practice 2 - Europe

Alex Wurz rounded off a superb day for Williams on Friday by topping the timesheets in the second free practice session for this weekend's European Grand Prix

Test driver Wurz had already set the pace in the morning's faster session and signalled Williams' intent to challenge for honours at a track where they last won in 2003.

The Austrian's fastest time was over nine tenths of a second faster than World Champion Fernando Alonso, who was second quickest for Renault.

Behind Alonso, Ferrari's Michael Schumacher, who comes from nearby Kerpen,
was third ahead of Red Bull's Robert Doornbos and Honda tester Anthony
Davidson.

Williams' German rookie Nico Rosberg caused the first moment of interest when he went off the track after 19 minutes of the session, while on top of the timesheets.

Rosberg cut across the run-off area at the NGK chicane near the end of the lap after missing the corner's apex, but suffered no damage to his car.

Red Bull's Christian Klien also went off when he locked up his right-front wheel under braking for the tight first-corner hairpin. He ran over the concrete-run-off area and continued.

The team's Dutch test driver Robert Doornbos added to Red Bull's frustrations when he spun in the Mercedes arena midway through the session.

Ralf Schumacher, who will make his 150th start in Sunday's race, proved that the track surface had limited grip by running wide at the 100 miles per hour turn 10 in his Toyota.

Midland's new German test driver Adrian Sutil continued to impress at a track where he won in last year's Formula Three Euroseries, ending up tenth.

Super Aguri's French debutant Franck Montagny continued to settle into his new car, despite having never driven it before today, and was the biggest improver of the afternoon session.

He knocked over 2.7 seconds off his morning time.
