Ecclestone vows to help BRDC
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has vowed to do a 50-50 deal with the British Racing Drivers' Club to secure the future of the British Grand Prix if its members approve new plans for the circuit
The plans, revealed in full by autosport.com today, have been sent to club members this week in a bid to garner support for them ahead of a crunch meeting to decide Silverstone's future on April 28.
Former British Formula Three champion Harry Stiller is behind the new scheme and believes they are the best way forward for the club, rather than the St. Modwen redevelopment that has been backed by the BRDC board.
Stiller's plans have received the backing of Ecclestone - who has vowed to step in and help matters if it means securing the British GP's future.
"Harry's trying to put together something to retain the British Grand Prix," Ecclestone told this week's Autosport. "I said I'd be only too pleased to help.
"There are various ideas under discussions. He asked me if maybe I could be the promoter. Everything is possible.
"He is working hard. If we were to promote it we would be looking to go beyond 2009."
The proposals aim to make Ecclestone a 50 percent partner in promoting the British GP, with a view to also redeveloping Silverstone.
There are no plans, however, for reconfiguration of the circuit, although a new pits and paddock complex are central to the deal.
