Midland sign Sutil and Mondini

F3 Euroseries runner-up Adrian Sutil and World Series by Renault driver Giorgio Mondini have joined Midland F1 as test and reserve drivers this season, the team announced tonight

The team said Swiss driver Mondini will take part in nine Grands Prix as the team's Friday driver, while German Sutil will take part in some of the Friday practice sessions throughout the Formula One season as well as share testing duties between Grands Prix.

MF1 Racing Managing Director Colin Kolles commented: "Adrian drove for my F3 team in his rookie Euroseries season. When he earned pole position in just his third race, I was more than just impressed - I was convinced that he was a talent for the future.

"As MF1's Junior Driver in 2006, he will have the opportunity to mature professionally in a Formula One environment and prepare himself thoroughly for what I believe will be a great F1 career."

Sutil himself said: "This opportunity with MF1, at an early stage in my development as a driver, is a dream come true. I know that if I work really hard, I can repay the confidence that has been shown in me and earn a place among the top drivers in the world."

The 25-year-old Mondini, who raced in the World Series by Renault as well as a spell in the GP2 series mid-season, earned a Formula One test with Renault last autumn.

"That test whetted my appetite for Formula One and I am delighted to have this opportunity with MF1 Racing," the Swiss driver said. "The new car looks really good and I can't wait to drive it."

Midland are holding their 2006 launch on Friday morning at the team's factory in Silverstone.
