Alan Jones pulls out
Alan Jones has been forced to withdraw from the inaugural Grand Prix Masters race at Kyalami with severe neck pains
The 1980 World Champion made the decision after Saturday morning practice in South Africa when further physical problems literally cramped his style and he was still seven seconds away from pace-setter Emerson Fittipaldi.
"The problem has gradually worsened to the point where the pain is unbearable," Jones said. "I gave it my best shot this morning and wanted nothing more than to compete.
"Commitments at home and abroad over recent weeks have meant that I have been unable to attend the seat-fitting and test sessions and, unlike the other guys, adjustments to my seating position have not been possible.
"It's a very disappointing interruption to what is a stunning new series that has really captured my imagination. I will do everything I can over the winter to ensure my participation next year."
GP Masters chief medical officer, Steve Olvey, said: "Alan's unorthodox driving position has resulted in severe cervical muscle spasms, thereby creating an unsafe driving situation due to severe pain.
"The problem has compounded itself over the weekend to the extent that his participation in the race is too risky."
