Q & A with Nico Rosberg

Nico Rosberg: There's worse things than that, for sure! It's an unbelievably happy moment for me, to have won the GP2 championship, it's unreal - when you look at the list of names in the series you think 'shit, this is going to be a difficult one to win'. To have had a difficult start and then come out on top at the end is just amazing.

Q. It looked like a fairly easy win for you today - was it?

Rosberg: Yeah, it was pretty easy. The start was fairly difficult, and then to get the rhythm going and everything isn't too easy, but we got the car spot on again - we've done a fantastic job with the car this weekend, because it was very difficult to get a good balance. In the morning it was just a complete catastrophe but then qualifying was good, and we used the out lap before the race which was again a complete catastrophe, and we just got it spot on for the race again, and it just worked out fantastic.

Q. About the only unusual moment for you was when Heikki came in so early - what were you thinking at that stage?

Rosberg: When I saw that I thought 'what is he doing?' - I knew that was it, that that was going to win it for us, because even if a safety car came then I'd still come into the pits and I wouldn't lose anything. I really didn't understand that, especially since I knew the tyres would suffer a lot on this track. After that I thought 'what the hell are they doing?', and that it was good that they messed up their strategy once in the season too!

Q. When you came out after your stop you were ahead of him, and you were able to pull away fairly easily - what were those last laps like for you?

Rosberg: I knew that I had better tyres, so even if I relaxed I could still pull away, and from then on it was the longest time I've ever had in my entire life - it took so long it was just unbelievable - it was so difficult to concentrate because lap after lap it was getting hotter in the car, and it was so hard to keep my concentration. I went a little bit into a sort of automatic mode, where it was just the same all the time because I wasn't attacking, I was shifting early, and I went somewhere else in my head - it was good.

Q. You've got the title, ART has the team's title - what does it mean for you and the team after the year you've had?

Rosberg: It was a great season, and we were quick probably from the second race onwards - in Barcelona I had the fastest lap by a country mile - and we just progressively got faster and faster. Then we went to testing and got a lot better, and I hardly made any mistakes - I made a few, of course, but very few compared to last year. I think I've really improved myself, and I've got this qualifying thing where I've done a great job and got five poles, and I really enjoy it to go balls out for one lap. Everything worked out fine.

Q. And now Formula One beckons?

Rosberg: Yeah, definitely that's the next step, and I can't believe I'm actually talking about it like that! That seems the next step, and for sure I'll have a good chance for next year - at least a test driver, and maybe even a race drive. I'm still talking to Williams and BMW, but I think probably at Williams as a test driver for sure, and maybe even a race drive is a small possibility - it hasn't been spoken about really, but who knows.
