BRDC Awards: Dennis honoured
McLaren team boss Ron Dennis received a BRDC Gold Medal from Sir Jackie Stewart at the 2001 AUTOSPORT Awards for his support to the British Racing Drivers' Club
The Gold Medal is awarded to non-drivers who have shown long-term outstanding achievement in the sport and for his efforts to keep the British Grand Prix. Previous winners include Bernie Ecclestone, Murray Walker and Ken Tyrrell, who died earlier this year. Dennis, who 20 years ago guided McLaren to its first win under him, was delighted with the medal.
"Occasionally you get the opportunity to give something back," said Dennis. "And that's something I did gladly here."
David Coulthard, Justin Wilson and Jason Plato were also honoured by the BRDC for their effort this season.
Coulthard received a Gold Star, awarded by a points system for British drivers in international competition, following his second place in the Formula 1 World Championship. Wilson was also given a Gold Star; this was a discretionary prize after the young Englishman became the first Brit to win the F3000 Championship this year.
And Plato received a Silver Star, for British drivers in a domestic championship, after his title success in the British Touring Car Championship this year.
