Hungarian GP penalty takes Kvyat closer to F1 race ban

Daniil Kvyat feels Formula 1's stewards like to "make an example" out of him after he was handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Lance Stroll during Hungarian GP qualifying

The Toro Rosso driver was recovering to the pits after spinning near the end of Q1, but the stewards did not believe he did enough.

Kvyat explained his team had warned him too late that Stroll was on a hot lap and when he realised, he took to the grass.

As well as his grid penalty, he was also awarded a penalty point, taking his tally to 10 for a 12-month period and just two away from incurring a one-race ban.

"I have to accept their decision," Kvyat told reporters.

"Unfortunately we had a miscommunication with the team, the team didn't tell me anyone was coming.

"Unfortunately it happens. I was asked to bring the car in slowly because of vibrations.

"The speed was so different and when I saw him, I went on the grass but for them it was not enough even that.

"I think they like to make an example out of me."

When asked if he feels he is being targeted by officials, having received a series of penalties during this campaign, Kvyat replied: "I don't care anymore."

He added that he does "not see any point" in speaking with FIA F1 race director Charlie Whiting regarding the penalties and the perception that he is being targeted.

The stewards said in a statement: "The stewards examined video, driver radio communications, timing data, telemetry and car positioning data evidence and heard from Daniil Kvyat, Lance Stroll and the team representatives.

"The stewards determined that Kvyat was on an exceptionally slow lap having spun earlier and damaged his tyres.

"The stewards acknowledged that he was warned by the team very late of the approach of Stroll who was on a fast lap.

"Further, Kyvat pulled as far to the right as he could as soon as he saw Stroll.

"However, the stewards considered that these were not mitigating factors.

"Kyvat was driving exceptionally slowly and taking the racing line at the end of Q1 when other drivers were attempting to set fast laps and this led to the unnecessary impeding."
