Red Bull F1 reserve Gasly poised to replace Buemi for New York FE

Red Bull Formula 1 reserve driver Pierre Gasly is set to replace Sebastien Buemi at Renault e.dams for Formula E's New York double-header next month

The 21-year-old, whose main programme is in Super Formula this year, is set to be reunited with the DAMS team he spent his maiden GP2 season in 2015 with if FE points leader Buemi is unable to attend the Brooklyn races owing to his Toyota LMP1 commitments at the Nurburgring.

Gasly attended the Le Mans 24 Hours last weekend and spent some time at the DAMS workshops located close to the circuit.

He is believed to have had the all-clear from the Red Bull F1 team to race in New York.

Gasly was initially due to attend the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, but can now head to New York to be Nicolas Prost's Renault e.dams team-mate for the July 15-16 event.

Buemi holds a 32-point lead in the drivers' championship while Renault e.dams tops the teams' standings by 58 points with four races across the New York and Montreal weekends remaining.

Renault e.dams co-founder Jean-Paul Driot has refused to name drivers in the past, but recently told Autosport a "quality" replacement for Buemi would be key and it would be a driver who "will not have race experience" in FE.

An approach for Scott Speed was rebuffed when the American's Global Rallycross employer Andretti would not release him for the one-off appearance in New York.

Toyota and Renault e.dams are believed to be discussing this week whether there is any scope for Buemi to be released to race in New York.

Autosport understands the only possibility of this being considered would have been if Buemi and his team-mates Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima had won at Le Mans last weekend and stretched their WEC points lead.

Instead the trio finished eighth and was usurped at the top of the WEC table by Porsche's Le Mans winners Brendon Hartley, Timo Bernhard and Earl Bamber.

Confirmation on Buemi's replacement is expected to come from Renault e.dams later this month.
