Porsche eyeing factory-supported Spa 24 Hours entry

Porsche is working on putting together a factory-supported entry for the Spa 24 Hours next month

The German manufacturer has revealed that it is busy with a plan to put at least one car with three factory drivers in the Pro class of the blue-riband round of the Blancpain Endurance Series on July 29/30.

Frank-Steffen Walliser, the vice-president in charge of GT racing at Porsche Motorsport, told Autosport: "I hope we can do it, but not everything is finalised."

Walliser revealed that a factory assault would be with "an additional team" rather than an existing Porsche customer squad already running in the BGTS.

Factory Porsche driver Timo Bernhard's Team 75 Motorsport, which fields 911 GT3-Rs in the ADAC GT Masters series, is understood to be one of the prime candidates for factory support at Spa.

Porsche would join Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Bentley, Lamborghini, Nissan, McLaren and Ferrari in fielding a factory-backed car or cars at Spa if the plan comes to fruition.

Walliser explained that it is important for Porsche to try to promote the 911 GT3-R in the BGTS.

"Blancpain is important to us and we want to see more of our cars in the pro category," he said.

"From a sales point of view, it is easier to sell cars if you are successful."

BGTS boss Stephane Ratel said he was hopeful that Porsche would be on the grid with a factory-supported car at Spa.

"Last year we had 63 cars and 10 different manufacturers on the grid, and people were asking how we could improve," he said.

"My response was that I wanted factory-supported cars from Ferrari and Porsche. We have Ferrari [with the Kaspersky AF Corse-run entry with a driver roster including Giancarlo Fisichella], and now I want Porsche.

"I know they are looking, so I am hopeful that they will come."
