DTM Lausitzring: Points leader Auer takes second pole of the season

DTM points leader Lucas Auer secured his second pole position of the season ahead of Saturday's opening race at the Lausitzring

At the scene of his first victory in the series 12 months earlier, Auer had trailed Audi's Rene Rast after his first run in the 20-minute qualifying session but improved by just over three tenths of a second on his final flying lap to claim pole by 0.105 seconds.

Auer also claimed pole for the season opener at Hockenheim a fortnight earlier - which he duly converted into victory - while his best time of 1m16.193s at the Lausitzring secured him an additional three points.

The Austrian will be joined on the front row by fellow Mercedes driver Robert Wickens, who notched his first points of the season as a result having endured a torrid season opener.

Maxime Martin had been an inconspicuous runner in the first part of the session but improved late on to secure third in his BMW M4 DTM, ahead of early pacesetter Rast.

The BMWs of Timo Glock and Tom Blomqvist will share row three, while row four is an all-Audi affair with Nico Muller leading Mike Rockenfeller.

Briton Gary Paffett improved on the first flying lap of his second stint but wound up ninth, ahead of Edoardo Mortara, double champion Marco Wittmann and Hockenheim race two winner Jamie Green.

Green was later excluded from the session for using tyres that had been assigned to Rosberg team-mate Rast.
