Talladega NASCAR: Ricky Stenhouse Jr takes shock win in overtime
Ricky Stenhouse Jr made a move up the inside on the penultimate lap of the NASCAR Cup race at Talladega in overtime to claim a surprise first series victory
Despite starting from pole position, the race had look beyond Roush Fenway Racing driver Stenhouse for a time after he dropped to 20th early on to clear debris from his radiator.
But a massive crash involving Chase Elliott and AJ Allmendinger and almost a dozen others with 28 laps to go allowed Stenhouse to move up the order after a red flag stoppage, while he was later able to advance to fourth through two subsequent cautions with 10 and three laps remaining respectively.
At the final restart in overtime, a rapid launch down the back straight allowed him to power past Kyle Busch and he held on for victory by less than a car length over Jamie McMurray and Busch, with both finishing within a tenth of a second of Stenhouse.
Stenhouse could have been eliminated from the race early on when his sudden slowing move on lap 15 to clear debris from his radiator caught out points leader Kyle Larson, who had to swerve right and hit the wall, bringing out the first of five cautions.
Larson eventually finished in 12th, allowing him to maintain his points lead over Martin Truex Jr in the standings - Truex retiring as a legacy of damage sustained in the in the late multi-car pile-up that caused the race to be stopped for half an hour.
Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin won the first and second stages respectively, but neither of those two featured in the fight for victory as Keselowski got trapped behind slower traffic on the final restart and finished seventh, four places clear of Hamlin.
