Formula E reveals revised Berlin Tempelhof track layout

Formula E has revealed details of the revised track layout that will be used when its Berlin round returns to the former Tempelhof airport in June

The circuit has been slightly shortened and simplified compared to the layout used in May 2015 before the race was transferred to downtown Berlin while the airfield was used to house refugees.

Down from 1.5 miles in length to just under 1.4, it now features a long back straight and the majority of corners have been altered.

The revamped track still runs close to the historic airport terminal canopy, but an original proposal to actually run through part of the terminal building has not come to fruition.

The German FE round will be a double-header this year, with the races taking place on June 10-11.

SHANGHAI EYED FOR CHINA RETURN

FE has begun working on a return to mainland China for its 2018/19 season, with a race in downtown Shanghai on the agenda.

The championship raced in Beijing in its first two campaigns but China does not feature on the 2016/17 calendar.

FE chief Alejandro Agag was in Shanghai for meetings about the project last week, and said a return to mainland China would not come at the expense of the Hong Kong race added this year.

"We are exploring the possibility of expanding Formula E in China," said Agag.

"For us it is a key market where electric cars are really being developed and are becoming a lot more mainstream and it is our mission to promote electric cars.

"We are making it a priority to race here.

"We are going to continue to race in Hong Kong but we are talking with our local partners here in China to bring another.

"There are different cities with different possibilities and we are having some really positive meetings in Shanghai, which is definitely one of the options."

Three FE teams currently have significant Chinese involvement, with both Techeetah and NEXTEV having Chinese entrant licences and owners, while Dragon's partner Faraday Future is financed by Chinese consumer electronics giant LeEco.

A potential Shanghai race could take place in or around the famous waterfront Bund area in the city's financial heartland, which Agag described as "an ideal place for us".
