Joey Mawson to take on Mick Schumacher again in European F3

Australian Joey Mawson, the man who beat Mick Schumacher to the 2016 German Formula 4 title, will take Schumacher on again this year in the Formula 3 European Championship

Mawson, 20, has completed a deal to remain with Dutch team Van Amersfoort Racing, with which he tested in F3 last autumn.

The deal has been facilitated thanks to Mawson's support from Australian investment company PODIUM ('Promoting Our Drivers In Universal Motorsport').

"I'm ready for the next step," said Mawson, who was pipped to the MRF Challenge title last weekend by Harrison Newey on a wins tiebreak.

"Following the strong relationship we have built up, I'm glad to be taking the next step together with Van Amersfoort Racing.

"I know everybody in the team, they know me, so that will definitely help to speed up the learning process in my first season in Formula 3.

"I'm well aware of the task that I'm facing, but I'm eager to learn and acquire more experience.

"I've already had my first taste of driving the Dallara-Mercedes Formula 3 car and I can hardly wait to get back behind the wheel again!"

VAR boss Frits van Amersfoort said: "We really enjoyed working with Joey in the past two years and, after all the success we have had together, it was only natural we could work together for the coming season.

"Allowing drivers who raced with us in the lower formulae to make the next step in their careers while staying with our team is exactly in line with our philosophy of the Van Amersfoort Racing single-seater staircase - Joey is a perfect example and we are looking forward to working with him again this year.

"Joey has clearly demonstrated his abilities and I am convinced that, given the right support, he has what it takes to do well in Formula 3."

Mawson joins promising German David Beckmann and second-year VAR F3 driver Pedro Piquet in the VAR line-up, while Newey is also widely expected to fill the fourth and final seat.

Canadian Kami Laliberte, whose father is a major investor in VAR, completed an F3 testing programme late last year but has elected instead to mount an attack on the German F4 title in his second full year in the series.
