Da Costa gets second Hockenheim pole, title rivals fifth and sixth
Antonio Felix da Costa grabbed a second pole at Hockenheim on his farewell weekend in the DTM, as title rivals Marco Wittman and Edoardo Mortara qualified alongside each other
Portuguese da Costa moved to the top of the times on the second run in his Schnitzer-run BMW M4, pipping the ART Mercedes of Gary Paffett by a mere 0.014 seconds.
Paffett was the fastest on the first runs as Mercedes bounced back from its dreadful Saturday, but did not quite have an answer to the late-session pace of da Costa.
Two more BMWs share the second row in the hands of Tom Blomqvist and Maxime Martin, but it is on the third row where the championship interest lies.
Edoardo Mortara, who needs to finish at least in the top two to stand any chance of beating Marco Wittmann to the title, ran wide at Turn 1 on his first run, failing to set a time and sending his Abt Audi to the pits for attention.
The Italian emerged for the second runs and immediately went third, dislodging Wittmann from that position.
But on the final lap Wittmann - who had been second on the opening runs - managed to find a little bit extra from his BMW to narrowly beat Mortara to fifth.
Robert Wickens will start seventh in his Mercedes, ahead of BMW's Timo Glock, Merc man Christian Vietoris and the Audi of Jamie Green.
After announcing his retirement on Saturday evening, Timo Scheider will start his final DTM race from 20th on the grid in his Audi.
