Formula E testing: Vergne fastest on second day for Techeetah

Jean-Eric Vergne set a new lap record on the second day of 2016/17 Formula E pre-season testing, his first running with the Techeetah team

The Frenchman, who has switched to the new FE entry from the DS Virgin Racing team, set a 1m29.634s to lead a trio of drivers under the best time from testing last year.

Vergne led Mahindra's rookie Felix Rosenqvist and Renault e.dams' reigning FE champion Sebastien Buemi in the faster morning session, with little more than a tenth separating the three.

Techeetah is running a Renault Z.E.16 powertrain, the same as Buemi in the factory team, and Vergne made full use of that by setting the fastest time of anyone at 170kW, the maximum power output in race trim, as well.

Daniel Abt set the pace in the afternoon session and his 1m30.192s was the fourth best time for the day overall.

Most of the field did not complete representative 200kW laps, with the likes of Andretti duo Antonio Felix da Costa and Robin Frijns suffering issue on their fast attempts.

Frijns also missed a chunk of the morning session when his team was forced to replace the battery - one of only three upgraded units the team has this week - in his car after an issue early in the day.

Jaguar racked up another 69 laps, with Mitch Evans taking over from Alex Lynn alongside Adam Carroll, but also suffered its first on-track stoppage.

Evans had just posted his best lap of the session, a 1m31.267s, when he stopped just after the start-finish line.

The New Zealander, whose adviser Mark Webber was present for the test, was a second off the pace in the afternoon at 200kW, while Carroll had been two seconds slower than Vergne in the morning at 170kW.
