Silverstone Formula V8 3.5: Nissany survives clash for maiden win

Charouz-run Lotus racer Roy Nissany survived a high-speed collision at Stowe corner to claim a dramatic maiden Formula V8 3.5 victory in the opening race of the weekend at Silverstone

Nissany clashed with early race leader Egor Orudzhev as he challenged the Russian for the lead of the race, and despite spinning was able to hold on to the lead of the race until the finish to claim victory ahead of Matthieu Vaxiviere.

The race-defining crash came on lap 16 of the 23-lap race after a lengthy pursuit of Orudzhev by Nissany.

Arden's Orudzhev had covered the inside line on the run down the Hangar Straight, before jinking left and allowing Nissany to commit fully alongside Orudzhev as the pair approached the Stowe apex.

As Orudzhev turned in, contact was made, sending both men spinning down the tarmac run-off area.

At the time of the clash, the pair had enjoyed a 10.5-second advantage over SMP Racing's Matthieu Vaxiviere in third, with that cushion allowing Israeli Nissany to return to the track in the lead, with Orudzhev dropping down the order before retiring.

Nissany demonstrated strong speed in the closing laps to extend his lead over Vaxiviere from three to six seconds at the chequered flag.

"The start of the race was normal," said Nissany. "Even if Egor closed the door aggressively a few times, the fight was still nice.

"One time [on the National Pit Straight] it was quite hard, but still fair. I thought I could pass cleanly, but he didn't leave me any room. Fortunately, [after the incident] God was with me, and my car was not too damaged.

"The brakes were not perfect and my steering wheel was not quite in the right place, but I could still make good lap times."

Poleman Vaxiviere had bogged down away from the lights, and immediately dropped to third behind Orudzhev and Nissany.

The Frenchman appeared to struggle relatively to the leaders in the high speed corners, but held off a determined drive from Nissany's Lotus team-mate Rene Binder to secure second by 0.6s.

"I thought I had cooked my brakes before the start, and I was worried as I had a long pedal," said Binder.

"But the car was great. I used up all my DRS passing Aurelien Panis and Tom [Dillmann], so afterwards I had nothing left to get by Matthieu."

AVF Formula's Dillmann formed the last of a three-car fight for second. Dillmann lost an early third position to Binder at Stowe on lap six, but maintained his championship lead with fourth.

Panis, who was outbraked by Binder at Vale on the second lap, completed the race in fifth ahead of Pietro Fittipaldi.

Fortec driver Fittipaldi's team-mate Louis Deletraz was unable to pull away from his fifth place grid slot, causing an aborted start and second formation lap.

Deletraz subsequently made a pitlane start and recovered to 10th place.

Dillmann leads the drivers' standing on 144 points, 33 clear of Deletraz. Aurelien Panis is third on 102 points, with Nissany fourth on 99.
