F1 drivers face drive-through penalties for Hungary track limits

Track limits were a big talking point in the preceding races at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone, with the FIA taking a "zero tolerance" approach to stop them being abused.

This weekend, timing loops have been installed in the Hungaroring kerbs to flag up when track limits are being exceeded, with drivers' opinions of the system split.

The FIA has now outlined the implications of track limits abuse at the monitored areas for the rest of the weekend.

"During the race, and in accordance with article 27.4 of the sporting regulations, any driver who is judged to have left the track three times at these corners (when counted cumulatively) will be shown a black and white flag," said the FIA in a note to the teams.

"One further crossing will result in a report being made to the stewards for not having made every reasonable effort to use the track.

"As discussed, this is likely to result in a drive-through penalty for any driver concerned."

For qualifying, the FIA will continue with its "zero tolerance" approach.

"We would like to make it clear that the loops are set up to register a crossing when a car is approximately 20cm beyond the white line," added the note.

"Every lap time achieved by leaving the track will be deleted in accordance will article 12.3.1.d of the sporting code."

The FIA added that if it is satisfied a driver left the track at these points for reasons beyond their control, such as being forced off track, lap times in qualifying will not be deleted nor will the crossing count towards a driver's total during the race.
