DTM Zandvoort: Jamie Green beats Mercedes drivers to win race two

Jamie Green took victory in Zandvoort's second race to propel himself right into title contention in the DTM

The Briton lost the lead only during the pitstop cycle, but his Audi came under immense pressure from the Mercedes of Saturday winner Robert Wickens during the first 12 laps, before they pitted in tandem.

On the 11th lap, Wickens looked to the inside of Tarzanbocht and then, with Green's line compromised in defence, the Canadian almost drew sufficiently level to make what would have been a spectacular pass at the following Gerlachbocht.

Green emerged from the pits roughly a second in front of Wickens, and then built more time on his pursuer when they came up to pass some of the late-stopping slower cars.

Most of them were driving Audis, so were sympathetic to Green, but the crucial move came when he managed to spear past Daniel Juncadella's Mercedes at Tarzan.

Once the late-stoppers were out of the way Green was almost three seconds in front, with Wickens holding off the sister Mercedes of Gary Paffett and Christian Vietoris, plus the Audi of Edoardo Mortara.

But Mercedes' three challengers were reduced to one with a few laps remaining, when front punctures struck both Wickens and Vietoris, Wickens being sent off the track at one of the fast right-handers.

That left Paffett to trail home in second, backing off over the final lap to allow Green a winning margin of almost 10 seconds, while Mortara faded in third.

Marco Wittmann retained his series lead with a distant fourth, the top BMW finisher, with Nico Muller's Audi chasing him home.

Timo Glock (BMW) completed the top six, while Mattias Ekstrom, who made a late stop from an artificial lead, benefitted from fresh tyres on his Audi to do some overtaking up to seventh.

One of the most stubborn late-stoppers was Audi stand-in Rene Rast, but Paul di Resta finally forced his way past and was rewarded with eighth in his Mercedes.

Di Resta only just held off fellow Mercedes driver Lucas Auer - who completed a splendid outside pass on Martin Tomczyk at Tarzan - and the BMW of Tom Blomqvist as this trio completed the points scorers.
