DTM Zandvoort: Audi furious with Mortara penalty given in error
Audi has been left fuming by the drive-through penalty that cost title contender Edoardo Mortara points in the opening DTM race at Zandvoort
Both Mortara and Audi stablemate Nico Muller were given drive-through penalties for speeding under virtual safety car conditions, and now Audi has claimed that the race stewards have admitted that there was a problem with the GPS systems on the cars.
Mortara, who started the race just two points behind series leader Marco Wittmann, was running sixth behind fellow Audi driver Jamie Green when he took his penalty.
As a result of his non-score the Italian has dropped to third, 20 points adrift of BMW star Wittmann and 10 behind Mercedes' first-race winner Robert Wickens.
Audi DTM boss Dieter Gass said: "The mistake that happened there is hard to accept.
"This is really bitter because, as a result, Edo lost at least eight points, which might decide the championship at the end of the season.
"In addition, Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline has lost the lead of the teams' standings and we've lost points in the manufacturers' classification because Edo finished 17th instead of sixth."
Mortara added: "I did nothing wrong - that's obvious based on the on-board footage from my car and our data log."
