FRenault Eurocup ace Habsburg in line for Fortec's F3 return

Formula Renault Eurocup ace Ferdinand Habsburg looks to set to be part of Fortec Motorsport's return to the Formula 3 European Championship later this season

The 18-year-old Austrian will be joined by 20-year-old Russian Vasily Romanov - his team-mate this season in Fortec's FR2.0 line-up - for this week's official two-day F3 test at Hockenheim, which takes place on Wednesday and Thursday.

Autosport revealed recently that Fortec was moving towards a return to top-level F3 competition, having tested Force India protege Jehan Daruvala - another FR2.0 frontrunner - at Silverstone.

Habsburg's manager Jamie Campbell-Walter told Autosport: "At the moment there's nothing signed, sealed and delivered, but the idea is to do FIA F3 next year.

"He's on a good run at the moment [Habsburg is also second in the Euroformula Open series, for F3 cars with spec Toyota engines] and has scored a lot of podiums.

"The plan is to do the Macau Grand Prix so he learns it for next year, but Fortec said the best way to qualify for that is to do an FIA F3 race, so it transpires we could do the final round at Hockenheim."

Habsburg and Romanov will only test on the Wednesday at Hockenheim as they need to get to Monza for this weekend's FR Eurocup round.

It will be the second day in an FIA-spec F3 car for Habsburg, who tested with Fortec at the Hungaroring recently.

Fortec team boss Richard Dutton added: "Fortec are delighted to return for the official F3 test at Hockenheim.

"We have carried out an extensive test programme with several drivers in preparation for a return to the championship towards the end of the year."
