MotoGP Catalunya: Jorge Lorenzo heads Maverick Vinales in FP2
Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo finished the opening day of MotoGP's Catalunya Grand Prix on top, after leading the way in the second practice session at Barcelona
The three-time champion led the bulk of the morning session but was eventually pipped at the end by Maverick Vinales, and the pattern looked set to repeat in the second 45 minutes of running before Lorenzo responded.
Entering the final 10 minutes, Lorenzo's 1m42.281s was one tenth clear of the field but two tenths off the pace set in the morning's cooler conditions.
Vinales then jumped into top spot with a time of 1m41.954s, the first sub-1m42s lap of the weekend, 0.327 seconds up on Lorenzo, and lapping within one tenth again the next time around.
When Vinales finished his run, Lorenzo responded, setting a 1m41.712s with five minutes to go, enough to finish the session with an advantage of 0.242s over Vinales at the front.
LCR satellite rider Cal Crutchlow was third and the best of the Honda riders, just 0.057s slower than Vinales, looking to rebound from a frustrating start to the season.
Dani Pedrosa responded from a tough morning to set the fourth-fastest time, while factory Honda team-mate Marc Marquez was only ninth - 0.773s off Lorenzo's pace - having saved a wild moment through Turn 5 halfway through the session.
Scott Redding was fifth on his Pramac Ducati, ahead of Valentino Rossi, who finished the session 0.584s slower than his team-mate Lorenzo.
Hector Barbera was seventh on another satellite Ducati, ahead of the first factory Ducati, Andrea Iannone eighth, with Andrea Dovizioso 10th.
After crashing in the morning, Marc VDS' Jack Miller fell again, this time at Turn 3, while Alvaro Bautista also came unstuck on his Aprilia, at Turn 1.
