DTM Hockenheim: Audi tops first practice with Mortara and Green
Edoardo Mortara led Jamie Green in an Audi one-two as the 2016 DTM season commenced with opening practice at Hockenheim on Friday afternoon
Mortara had a half-second margin over the field with his 1m34.217s lap, usurping Green early on and staying unopposed for the rest of the half-hour session.
Bruno Spengler's BMW interrupted what would have been an all-Audi top five with third ahead of Mattias Ekstrom and Nico Muller.
The Mercedes were down the order - Daniel Juncadella the best of its contenders in seventh.
While Mortara had a comfortable cushion up front, less than one second covered Green in second to Adrien Tambay in 20th.
Maxi Gotz caused the only incident of the afternoon when he spun his Mercedes into the gravel, ending his session after just three laps.
Teams have a further practice session on Saturday morning ahead of the season's first qualifying session and race.
EKSTROM LEADS THE WAY IN WORLD RX
The DTM is again sharing the Hockenheim bill with the World Rallycross Championship at its opener.
Ekstrom is switching between the two disciplines through the weekend.
Prior to jumping in his DTM car, he had been quickest in practice and the first qualifying heats of the RX event for his own EKS team.
Coupled with third in the second qualifying heats, that puts him at the head of the intermediate classification going into Saturday.
World RX's remaining qualifying heats take place after DTM race one on Saturday, with the semis and final on Sunday morning between the DTM warm-up and its race two qualifying session.
