Theodore name back in IndyCar for Long Beach and Indianapolis

The historic Theodore Racing name is to return to IndyCar competition this weekend in Long Beach in a collaboration with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing

RLLR driver Graham Rahal will compete under the banner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan with Theodore Racing in the California event, with the deal also encompassing the Indianapolis road-course race and the Indy 500.

Theodore will spread its backing to RLLR's part-time second car, which Indy Lights champion Spencer Pigot will campaign in the two Indy races.

The Theodore team name was revived in 2013 for the Macau Grand Prix by Status Grand Prix GP2 principal Teddy Yip Jr, whose father Teddy Sr was synonymous with the Far East street race and also entered teams in Formula 1 and Indycars in the 1970s and '80s.

Theodore was a constructor in both F1 and Indycar - Chico Serra was the last driver to start a CART Indycar round in a Theodore, at Portland in 1985, while the last F1 point claimed by a Theodore was coincidentally at Long Beach, with Johnny Cecotto driving in '83.

Yip Jr said: "Indycar racing was extremely important to my father and in many ways it was his second home.

"This year's Indy 500 marks an important anniversary [the race's centenary], and it's fitting the Theodore name is an active part of the celebrations.

"Partnering with RLLR makes perfect sense. Bobby [Rahal] knew my father and, much like myself, Graham is part of a new generation hoping to continue a legacy and make his own mark in the history books."

Rahal Sr added: "What an honour it is to have Theodore Racing back in Indycar racing and with us at RLLR.

"We are so appreciative to Teddy Yip Jr and his staff for entrusting the historic legacy of the Theodore name with our team.

"While I never actually drove for Teddy Sr, many of the greatest drivers that went on to F1, Formula 5000 and other categories drove for Theodore."
