The Rebellion Racing squad is investigating an expansion into the IMSA SportsCar Championship next year alongside another privateer LMP1 campaign in the World Endurance Championship.
Rebellion team boss Bart Hayden is on a fact-finding mission to this weekend's 2016 IMSA opener at Daytona.
He explained that the Anglo-Swiss squad is eyeing a Prototype assault with an LMP2 car on the four IMSA long-distance races that make up the North American Endurance Cup next season.
"It is something that we are definitely looking at and we think doing something in the four long races with a P2 car would be workable alongside the P1 programme," Hayden told Autosport.
Rebellion, which has confirmed its intention to race on in the WEC this year with two AER-engined R-Ones, is likely to continue in P1 into 2017, according to Hayden.
"We want to maximise the investment we've made with the R-One, but one possibility is that we could run a reduced programme based around Le Mans," he explained.
Rebellion has a history of racing in North America: it won the Petit Le Mans enduro at Road Atlanta in 2012 and '13 with the Lola-Toyota B12/60 and contested four of the 10 ALMS rounds in '13.
Hayden said that Rebellion "doesn't have a plan" for beyond the end of the 2017, after which new P1 rules are likely to render the R-One obsolete.
He insisted it was essential that the new rules "found a way to get the privateers excited".
Rebellion has previously hinted that it could make a wholesale switch to North American after the lifespan of the R-One comes to an end.
